Are You Preparing for Bariatric Surgery and Need a Psychological Assessment?

Undergoing bariatric surgery is a life-changing decision, one that requires not just physical readiness but emotional preparation too. You may be feeling overwhelmed by the process, unsure about what to expect from the psychological assessment, or anxious about how your mental health history might impact your eligibility.

This part of your journey doesn’t have to feel intimidating or judgmental. A psychological assessment is simply a step toward ensuring you're set up for long-term success, and I’m here to walk you through it with care and professionalism.

Common Concerns Clients Bring to This Process:

  • Feeling nervous about what the assessment will involve

  • Worrying your mental health history might disqualify you

  • Not knowing what to expect from the evaluation process

  • Feeling rushed or misunderstood in past medical settings

  • Wanting to be truly ready, emotionally and mentally, for surgery

This Is About Support, Not Judgment

A bariatric assessment is an opportunity to explore your strengths, identify areas where you may need extra support, and make sure you feel prepared for lasting success. It’s not a test you “pass” or “fail,” it’s part of setting you up for the healthiest outcome possible.

In our sessions, we’ll discuss your goals, history, coping strategies, and support systems. I’ll help identify your strengths and any areas that may benefit from additional support as you move forward.

What to Expect in

A Bariatric Psychological Assessment

Step 1: Schedule Your First Appointment

We’ll begin with a brief consultation to answer your questions, review the process, and ensure you're comfortable moving forward. Once you schedule your appointment, I’ll send intake forms and questionnaires that give me a clear picture of your history and needs. During your first appointment (typically 60–90 minutes), we’ll explore your mental health history, current coping tools, support system, eating behaviors, and readiness for surgery.

Step 2: Second Appointment - Educational

Based on which surgery you are intending on moving forward with, we will go over key aspects to help you be the most prepared you can for success.

Step 3: Report and Recommendations

Following both of our appointments together, a report will be generated discussing your readiness for your intended bariatric surgery. This report will be provided directly to your surgeon.
